A day like any other, a few weeks ago. It was the first meeting before starting work, and probably this moment repeated itself in the same way over the years. Apple and Disney employees worldwide. “We have something for you”: a not very large box with the name of each employee written on it. What was inside was not sold in any store.
In mid-April, we stumbled upon the curious news of the online release of what could be a book about Steve Jobs Free download. The story went further: behind the design was the study of Jony Ive himself. It wasn’t just another book about genius.
This box contained only one thing. It opened easily, from the side it was very reminiscent of how the company’s products are sent by mail and after one fine Sheet of parchment paper to protect the cover, a book with a Snapshot of Steve Jobs as a young man and a title.
“Do something wonderful”.
Something unique, exclusive and meticulous

Before it was distributed, Apple employees watched a presentation by Steve Jobs. And just one question: “How do you feel when you see this?”. As an important part of the company, Jobs’ legacy is embedded in the DNA of our everyday lives. Knowing him means knowing that Because every product.
This book is not officially available for purchase anywhere. Is about a special and exclusive edition distributed to Apple and Disney employees and there is no other edition or physical copy. We can always download it online (also for free and read it over a good coffee because it is an absolute marvel), but the physical output speaks louder than its words.

I could access it to this exclusive physical edition for Apple employees. I have to say that it is one of the most careful, delicate, respectful and well designed physical book printings I have ever seen. Everything we have already read in the version on-line takes shape in this issue.

First, let’s talk about your measurements. It weighs 458 grams and is approx the size of a medium-sized notebook – 13.5 cm wide and 21 cm high. The thickness, about 2 cm: nothing to compare with anything similar, the physical edition of Jobs’ biography by Walter Isaacson – much larger and more voluminous.

“The best way to get to know a person is to listen to them. And the best way to get to know Steve is to listen and read what he’s said throughout his life.”. This is how Jobs’ widow begins her foreword: Laurene Powell jobs. The value of this book increases even more because the one who has known it best all his life is the one who opens its doors to us.

Designed by Ive, brought to you by Laurene Powell Jobs and gifted by Apple to every single employee around the world. Is a sign of respect, affection for the genius and also an opportunity to create something beautiful with your words, your speeches and the important moments of your life.

The occasion deserves The utmost care is taken to ensure this exclusive edition. Apple has rarely commented on the various books or films that have come out about Jobs – Pirates of Silicon Valley is my favorite – so creating a physical edition solely for distribution to your folks is a gesture of something more. They wanted Jobs to tell his own story.
An exquisite physical edition

The 253 pages included in Make Something Wonderful are a A must read for any fan of Apple and technology in general.. It contains some of the best moments that fueled the revolutions we are witnessing in our lives today. This physical edition has what all printed books still have: the little ritual of reading and feeling, which bring us even closer to the letters.

The cover is a hardcover, approximately 4mm thick, with a classic book design. The cover opening is marked on the cover and the binding allows you to reach any part of the pages without putting too much strain on the book.

It is not necessary to open the book to know that we are standing before something made with love and respect. The letters of the book are screen printed onto the cardboard Ive’s own studio typographyThe LoveFrom Serif: a classic, powerful stroke that almost looks like it was written by calligraphic artists. Something Jobs attached great importance to just before founding Apple.

Perfectly centered on the cover, a Snapshot of Steve Jobs from before the Macintosh. Bow tie, suit and the familiar look that has accompanied us for so many years. The outline of the photo is also smooth and punched in very good quality. It’s the perfect case to welcome us on this little journey into your life.

The back cover and the first protective pages of the leaves are in a bright blue colorwhich can be seen even when the book is closed, giving it some color and boldness when opened – a contrast to the classic gray of the cover.

The first thing we find when entering the content of the book is the quote from which the title of the book comes and which he pronounced in 2007. It’s a paragraph in which he expresses Apple’s philosophy and DNA Leave the world better than we found it. It was very important to him to hold on to these ideals.

I had heard those words before, ten years later the opening of the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park. It was the first thing we heard on that impressive stage that has become so familiar to us from the company’s presentations. It was he who read aloud the same text with which the book begins. Luckily, I was able to hold the iPhone and record that exact moment from my seat:

The book is published by Writer and historian Leslie Berlin, director of the “Steve Jobs Archive” foundation, from which all content is taken. The idea of this archive is to preserve and preserve Jobs’ deeds and works throughout his career as they happened. As if it were a captain’s log.

have the leaves a slightly denser grammage but light, which gives them some consistency and they’re a little soft, with little texture. It lies comfortably in the hand and is well anchored in the cover. It does not allow the book to be read comfortably without straining the spine.

There are many parts of the book that, as you know, include: pictures and photographs to accompany the text. Some have great documentary value because they have never been seen before. Others we already know, especially those of us who are fans of the brand or lived through Steve’s era.

The impression is also very good when reproducing these images, with a certain brightness in many of them that I know personally reminds me of old photo albums that many of us still have at home. I don’t doubt that maybe that’s the feeling he’s trying to convey – and he does it very well.

The typography, pleasant, easy to read and with blue to mark certain passages or moments of the book, gives the feel of a classic book a few more modern touches. He plays with colors, typography, and some italics to almost give the letters a voice that we’ll often hear as we read with his in mind.

Have the opportunity Read this issue in physical format it is an absolute luxury. When I returned the book to the person who loaned it to me, I felt like I was in some way part of a personal journey to many things Jobs has accomplished or done in his life – and maybe that’s why to give it away only to those who are part of the company.

And not, not officially sold (although you might find it on the second-hand market, at exorbitant prices, yes). If it were put up for sale I wouldn’t hesitate to get a copy and keep among the few physical books I already have at home the important moments of a genius like Jobs, Apple and Technology. Ultimately, for those of us who’ve experienced it over those years, it’s also, to some degree, a part of it our history – and of our life.
