The first beta of iOS 16.6 comes with a significant security improvement

Apple just announced the beta of iOS 16.6, the last version to be released before the presentation of iOS 17 at WWDC 2023 on June 5th. iOS 16.5 came full of news B. Fixing several bugs, supporting new beats, wallpaper to match the new volume they released, etc.

In these last updates of the year, Apple usually does not introduce changes at the visual level. At least not many. The idea is to add more stability to the software and add it security improvements. The new designs tend to rely on the version they announce at WWDC.

Stability, battery and security: the ABC of updates

It seems that iOS 16.6 will focus on these three pillars, and that’s exactly what an update of this style should be. In principle, the only relevant innovation that we found, beyond optimizations, has to do with security. Is called iMessage contacts security key verificationand it makes a lot of sense.

If you remember, some time ago it became known that various governments around the world were spying on journalists, critics, opponents and others. they did Accessing information on their phones about Pegasus, spyware owned by NSO, an Israeli cybersecurity company. They are only sold to states (or so they say) and the Israeli government itself considers them a weapon.

Apple was already talking about it back then, and started proposing solutions. Because if there’s one thing that Cupertino residents have always held to be of the utmost importance, it’s privacy. They can’t afford to have software that can compromise the security of every single one of their devices and they don’t do anything about it.

This verification, included in the first beta of iOS 16.6, allows the user speaking through iMessage to verify it using a password You only speak to the person you want to speak to. That there is no one reading the news or impersonating it. In addition, those who have enabled this option will receive a notification if for any reason a state has managed to access these encrypted conversations or a server in the cloud that contains confidential information.

I've been writing about all iPhones for 16 years. These are the three tricks I recommend to make them more secure

The option is included in this latest iOS beta, but Apple hasn’t enabled it yet. We don’t know exactly when it will be available, but from what we see, We’ll understand that very soon. Maybe Apple will talk about it during WWDC 2023. In any case, there is very little to know.
