Mark Gurman predicts his death

Before the arrival of Mac Studio, rumors told us that the new Mac Pro will come with Apple silicon chips could come in a new reduced size, in addition to the design we already know. Then, after the introduction of the Mac Studio, we all assumed it was the small variant of the Mac Pro, and it seems we were on the right track.

A few weeks ago, Apple introduced the M2 Pro and M2 Max, the professional range of M2 chips that have found their way into the new MacBook Pro (2023) and Mac mini (2023). Some chips that didn’t make it into the Mac Studio, and which Mark Gurman says may not. The reason is none other than the similarity between the teams.

A Mac Studio with little future ahead of the Mac Pro

While you might expect the Mac Studio to get M2 family chips at some point, that might not be the case. That’s what Gurman says in the latest issue of his Power On newsletter, noting that the similarity between the Mac Studio and the future Mac Pro is so great that the switch might not make sense. According to Gurman, the arrival of the Mac Pro could mean that the disappearance of Mac Studio or that the latter was waiting to be updated with the M3 or M4 generation.

“I wouldn’t expect a Mac Studio to be launched anytime soon. The next Mac Pro is very similar to the Mac Studio in functionality, adding the M2 Ultra chip instead of the M1 Ultra. So it wouldn’t make sense Apple is offering an M2 Ultra Mac Studio and an M2 Ultra Mac Pro at the same time Apple is unlikely to ever update Mac Studio or wait until the M3 or M4 generation, which would be a better way for the company to differentiate itself from Mac Studio Mac Pro .”

The truth is, however, we haven’t heard any rumors about the new Mac Studio It’s hard to believe that a Mac that launched its design about a year ago is going to go away from the catalogue. We only saw one version of the iMac Pro, but the circumstances were different.

The truth is that at the performance level a Mac Studio with an M2 Ultra could be very similar to the Mac Pro. Much of the Mac Pro’s appeal stems from its modularity for expanding RAM, GPU, storage, and other variables, but with the introduction of Apple silicon, that’s changing. The concept of System on a Chip no longer makes RAM expandable without changing the chip, and the same goes for the GPU. With that in mind, the distinction between Mac Studio and Mac Pro is crucial.

Mac Studio and Studio Display in the test: The Mac is bold again

Apple’s plans can change very quickly, but Mark Gurman’s claims are the closest we can come to knowing the future of Mac Studio. However, some Mac Studio could very well arrive next year with the M3 chips Doubts are already looming on the horizon.
