  • screens: The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is a foldable phone and, as usual in this type of device, we find two screens. The exterior is quite long at 6.2 inches (23.1:9 format). It is the one that the user will probably use the most. The folding screen measures 7.6 inches when extended and feels like a small tablet. Both have adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz. The iPhone 14 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED panel that clocks at 120Hz and has a maximum brightness of 2000 nits.
  • processor: Apple’s phone packs the company’s most powerful chip, the A16 Bionic. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 packs the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the king of the last generation of Qualcomm chips, at the time of its launch.
  • storage: The Japanese company offers 256 and 512 GB options, as well as 1 TB. The iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at 128GB, goes through 256 and 512GB and arrives up to 1 TB on the most expensive model.
  • cameras: Although the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is Samsung’s most ambitious smartphone, it’s not the best when it comes to photography. It has a triple rear camera with 50 MP main sensor and video recording up to 8K at 24 fps, and has two end faces; one of 4 MP when the phone is unfolded and another of 10 MP when the screen is folded. Apple also bets on a triple rear camera, debuting a 48MP main sensor and 4K video recording at 60fps. The front is of better quality than the Samsung, with TrueDepth being 12MP.
  • connectivity: They’re pretty balanced at this point, since they have WiFi 6 (6e in the case of Samsung), Bluetooth (5.3 on the iPhone and 5.2 on the Samsung), 5G, NFC, GPS, and a physical Lightning connector on the Apple device have and USB-C 3.2 OTG in South Korea for much faster transmission speeds.
  • Security: Apple has been using the in almost all of its mobile phones since the iPhone X Face ID, this is your secure facial recognition system. On the one hand, Samsung relies on the fingerprint reader.
  • operating system: The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 launched with Android 12 but is upgradable to Android 13 and will receive several other mobile operating system updates from Google. It is customized with One UI layer that gives Android a different look share and outfit it some features and functions not available in other terminals. The iPhone has iOS 16 which is only available for Apple products.
  • battery: The size of the battery of both terminals is similar, but the autonomy is not, and this is because Apple optimizes the operating system very well, resulting in greater energy efficiency. Apple promises up to 29 hours of uninterrupted video playback per charge, and with normal use, it can last almost two days (or two days with light use). This is usually a negative point with Android devices, but this point has also been improved with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
  • Price: The iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at 1,469 euros in the official Apple Store and from authorized retailers, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is available from 1,799 euros.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 VS iPhone 14 Pro Max, which ‘smart’ phone to buy?

iPhone 14 pro max

The two phones are the more ambitious proposals of both companies, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, although sometimes compared to Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max, belongs to a different range, this is that of foldable smartphones. These devices tend to be more expensive than the “normal” ones, and there’s proof of that with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 starting at €1,799.

Is it justified? The answer, as almost always, is that it depends. The Z Fold4 could be considered as one 2 in 1 device, as it is a phone when folded and a tablet when opened. A similar configuration at Apple would be the iPhone 14 Pro Max next to an iPad mini.

And the S23 Ultra comes with the stylus S pen, with the same features as the Apple Pencil (and others) that make the Hybrid a very interesting productivity tool. Due to the characteristics, the Samsung device offers more possibilities, but other factors must also be taken into account: operating system, autonomy, price, etc. And if you prefer the Apple and iOS ecosystem, it will be difficult to choose another.
